Two Years in Fort Collins

It's amazing the difference two years makes! The first picture was taken from our first day in Fort Collins. The second picture taken exactly two years later.

I look at my girl and it's easy to see how much she's grown. She's no longer a baby - she's a big girl! And as I look back over our past two years in Fort Collins - with all of its ups and downs, still a world of unknowns before us - I have to believe God my Father looks at us and sees how much we've grown, as well.

Perhaps it's time for an update on our lives in Fort Collins. A dear friend wrote an article about where we are in the process of starting up Fort Collins Community Church that you can read here. However, I've offered very little personal commentary on what this process has been like. It's time! No doubt it'll be therapeutic for me to write about. And who knows, maybe someone will benefit from our experience. Look for those updates to come... soon. :)

The Strout Wedding

We had the privilege to take part in Tyler and Samantha Strout's wedding. Ty and Sam were in our Oasis college ministry starting as freshmen, and we've been so blessed to watch them grow up. It was fun to watch them fall in love, and now we look forward to watching them grow together in their marriage. Chris officiated the wedding, and Hannah and I sat in the back of the sanctuary so we could discretely wave and make faces at all of the wedding party as they walked in. The best part of the wedding to me was listening to Chris tell stories about the bride and groom. I married the greatest story teller, and he so accurately described some of the greatest and funniest memories we share with Ty and Sam.

The great thing about doing life with so many great folks is catching up with them and celebrating even after you've moved across the country. Here are a few pictures from the rehearsal and dinner.

I Heart Fort Collins

Do you love Fort Collins? Do you love the people at Fort Collins Community Church? We need your help!

As most of you know, our desire as a church is to operate in a financially responsible and sustainable way. This means that the decisions we make as a church in regards to how we minister and our ability to do our ministry is largely dependent on having all of our funding in place for our yearly budget. The goal is to make responsible financial decisions that our budget can support so that we can be around for years to come.

Our desire is to be debt free, and in order to operate in the way that we feel God has led us to minister, we need financial support. We need people like you to partner with us!

We have set up an online giving program through iheartfortcollins.com that makes it easier than ever for you to donate directly to Fort Collins Community Church. What we are asking is that you prayerfully consider committing to donate to us for a four month period of time.

How does it work? Simply go to iheartfortcollins.com and you will find a big red DONATE button. You may choose to donate $25, $50 or $100 that will be withdrawn automatically on a monthly basis for four months, or choose to make a one time donation in an amount that you may choose yourself. It's that simple and it's completely secure through PayPal.
Every bit of support helps, and we hope that you will consider partnering with us financially. It is your prayers and financial support that allow us to do what God has called us to do here: To share God's truth and grace with the city of Fort Collins.

Two Weeks in Fort Collins

For a girl who is rarely at a loss for words (written, at least), I've been stunned on how to begin to update everyone on how we're doing. Two weeks ago we moved into our home in Fort Collins, and we've been going non-stop ever since. We're adjusting to our new life just fine, but it is an adjustment, that's for sure. All-in-all, we're loving it here!

I have a lot to say, but I think for now I'll just use broad strokes. The house is slowly coming together. We moved into a really cool old fixer-upper, and the only rooms we have completely unpacked and decorated are Hannah's room, the bathroom and the kitchen. The garage is still full of boxes! So I don't have a lot of pictures from around the house yet. Soon, though!

Hannah has adjusted fine on the most part - she's still sleeping on Texas time, though. We live around the corner from the city park, which has an incredible toddler playground, so she's enjoying being outside quite a bit! We seriously have the most outgoing little girl in the world and have even made friends with the neighbors and their dogs because of her friendliness.

I have started working for the ad agency I met with when we visited in May, the Mantooth Company. There's so much to say about how this all worked out, but for now I'll just say that I'm enjoying every second of my job. I'm able to work from home on my own time and for clients whose organizations are doing such great things for the community. I never thought I could be so fulfilled in my work.

And Chris is working hard with David in planning for our new church. There's really nothing new to report on this front as of yet. But we are at a point where we're going to make a coordinated effort to meet people in our community. We're increasingly surprised just how friendly all of our neighbors are!

One of our favorite things about being here is living so close to our best friends. We consider ourselves blessed to have friends we can basically go through life with. Not many can say that.

And other than that, we're loving the weather and discovering the cool things about our new city.

So those are the high points. In everything, I can't help but feel God wooing us to Him. From the way He's worked out some of the major details in our lives and then right down to the smallest, most thoughtful gestures, He shows us He cares about us. I suppose sometimes it takes being out of the daily grind to open your eyes and see it. Surely, it has been a great two weeks.

The Road Leads...to iTunes

** A guest blog written by my husband

This is a blog I intended to post over a week ago, but due to the hassles of moving, and not having access to internet for a few days, its taken longer than I planned to get it up. I'm writing this because I wanted to talk a bit about my new record and explain a little bit about why I did it, etc.

Ministry naturally demands sacrifice. In my case, God has called our family to start up a new church in Fort Collins, Colorado. Because of the nature of our ministry, we are giving up a piece of our financial stability. Over the last year-and-a-half, this has led to many conversations about how we might earn a living while also reserving the flexibility to serve the community freely.

One idea Randi and I tossed around was for me to make another record and put it up for sale on iTunes. This was an idea that I was not opposed to, but I couldn’t fully embrace it either. The reason for this stemmed from the fact that I have never wanted to turn my worship music into some sort of commercial venture. In other words, I do not write worship songs with the sole intent to make money. However, I also realize that God has gifted me in the area of music and who am I to question God on a matter like this if He chooses to use my gifts to provide for me and my family.

Eventually I decided that I was not going to go out of my way to write new music for a new record. But if God started giving me new music and giving me inspiration for new songs, then I would take it as it came. And if it reached a point where there was enough material, then I would look at the possibility of compiling it into something I might be able to sell.

Honestly, I didn’t think anything would come of it because for about two years I have had one of the worst creative blocks I’ve ever had in my life. But not long after we decided to move, God began working on me in a different way -- He began to show me what worship might look like in our new church.

There’s a pretty good chance that many of the people attending one of our worship services will have spent very little time in a church. I began asking myself what was possible in the creative realm if I was leading worship for people who didn’t have a preexisting idea of what modern worship music might sound like. What was possible when my own creative process was not bound by the rules of current church culture? Questions like this began to open up tons of creative doors to walk through and explore.

And explore I did. God began to throw things at me left and right, not only in terms of creativity, but spiritually as well, as the last year-and-a-half has been a huge growing process for me. I have wrestled with life’s circumstances more recently than I ever have. As my family and I have been tested in so many ways, I have been forced to re-examine what it means to allow Christ to live in and through me. To re-examine my own identity in Christ, to be reminded of God’s provision and his never ceasing grace.

And the result is the EP that I just released. It represents a year-and-a-half of song writing, formed out of the change in my own life and all the things God has reminded me. It also represents my first effort at creatively stretching myself to the limits. It is not mainstream, nor is it what you would expect to hear in most churches on a Sunday morning, and I am OK with that. It is in every way different from anything I’ve ever done. I wanted to write in a way that the words were simple but represented big truths about God’s grace and our identity that are often overlooked in worship music.

So is this a worship record? That’s a great question. It is my worship, I can say that much. And maybe, at least it is my prayer, that it is your worship as well.

I think Randi already stated this in one of her blogs, but I don’t write music so that I can make tons of money or become a rock star. Let’s just face it, I don't think I'm that good, nor am I skinny enough to wear rocker clothes. But I do believe that music is meant to be shared. What kind of a person would I be to keep what God gives me to myself? So if in the process people enjoy it enough to maybe buy some of it, then that’s great. If you like the record, tell everyone about it. If you know someone else who might like it, point them in the right direction. There is a link at the bottom of this post that will take you to the iTunes store if you want to purchase it. Just know that your money is not going to pay for my new pair of skinny jeans or rock star highlights in my hair. It’s going to support me and my family as we live and minister in Colorado, doing what God has called us to do.

And for anyone who is interested, I will post an additional blog with the liner notes from the album as well as a few pictures from the studio since iTunes does not include the liner notes when you buy the record.

The Countdown Is On

Our days are numbered here in Tyler.
Tonight was our last night of Oasis -- after 8 years, might I add.
Tomorrow is Hannah's last day of daycare.
Friday is my last day of work.
Sunday is our last day at Colonial Hills.
Wednesday is Chris' last day of work.
And then it's pack, pack, pack until we move the following Tuesday morning, August 17th.

On The Road Again: Day 5

It was quite frustrating to drive away from Fort Collins this morning. God has been calling us here for a few years, and it feels like we're running the final stretch of a race with the finish line just within view.

Just thinking about all that needs to be done over the next six weeks (or so) is a little overwhelming! There are LOTS of loose ends that need to be tied up, boxes that have to be packed and family and friends to say goodbye to. And we never do things simply - in the middle of it all, Chris is taking a two-week mission trip to Guatemala! Whew!

Our finish line feels more like it's at the top of a hill! Thankfully, God gives His people the endurance, hope and strength needed to do this thing called life.

We left at 5 a.m., but had a little unfortunate detour. I was so proud of driving through the Raton Pass by myself while Chris slept that I completely forgot to turn. Dumb. So we'll get home to Hannah tonight about midnight. You better believe I'll be getting her up to snuggle when we get home.

A Day Of Rest: Day 4

After driving sixteen hours through the night, house-hunting for three days and a fantastic two hour long interview, we're pooped. We went to church this morning and have pretty much chilled today.

Tonight we grilled out at David and Laura's with a few other local church planters and a team of college student missionaries. It was fun getting to hang out! God is doing some really cool stuff through these folks in Fort Collins!

Later, we rode our bikes (in the rain!) a few blocks away to City Park to watch the annual Fourth of July fireworks show. You would have thought the weather would have kept people indoors at 9 o'clock at night, but oh no. The streets were packed with those riding and walking down to the park! I think I was more amazed at how community-oriented Fort Collins is than how FABULOUS the fireworks were.

The downpour of rain finally slowed to a sprinkle, and we just stood and watched the show with the mountains in the background. As I watched, I couldn't help but feel God wooing us a bit more. It's one thing to dream of a place, and another to see it become a reality. I'm looking forward to many more Independence Days in Fort Collins!

Su Casa Es Mi Casa: Day 3

Oh. My. Word. There are some CRAZ-Z-Z-ZY houses here! I mean, I think the Fraggle Rocks lived in one of the house's basements! I realize you get what you pay for, but some of the home owners really try to get away with a lot. They can because college students will put up with anything. But we've been extremely picky, and we accidentally found the greatest house!

Yesterday I listed what we were looking for in a house. After a day of searching, we realized we might have to compromise some.

Yesterday evening, we found what sounded like a good house to rent - perfect location at the right size and price. So we pulled up, and there was a window unit hanging out of the front of the house. My bearded husband says, "Uh-uh..." and we begin to drive away. Remember, A/C is a must and is non-negotiable. But by chance, we see that the cute little house next door has a "For Rent" sign in their yard. So I immediately call and get in touch with the home owner and arrange to see her house.

Skip to today - we walk through the newly remodeled, spacious two-bedroom, one-bathroom house WITH air-conditioning at exactly $1000 a month. It has a great front and back yards for Hannah to play, enough storage for Chris' guitars and such, a screened in sunroom with a gas grill and a garage. We were sold.

We met with the owners and paid our application fee and deposit almost on the spot, which was good because there were 23 others interested in the home that we beat to the punch!! As we began to get to know then, we instantly liked the owners. We even discovered that we even had a friend in common. I had to restrain myself from singing "It's A Small World".

We signed the lease and get the keys on July 12. They are still running a background and credit check on us as a formality, which makes me feel so vulnerable to let a perfect stranger know exactly how poor we've been! I'll get over it. And we'll hear something official by Monday. Just knowing we have a home waiting on us here makes things seem utterly official.

Here are a few pictures. They don't do this place justice!

Job Hunting: Day 2, Part 2

In the past few months, I've sent me resumé to countless businesses and ad agencies. I've had a few promising responses from a handful that want to meet with me once we've moved to town, but nothing solid. And so the search continues.

Late last Monday night, I did a very basic Yellow Page search, and an ad agency I hadn't seen before popped up at the top of my search results. I checked out their website and I was completely blown away by them in every way. I especially appreciate how little chest beating they do. They're very humble about their capabilities and let their work and reputation speak for itself. Most ad agencies will tell you how wonderful they are, but this agency focuses on how wonderful their clients are! LOVE that!

So like I said, it was late, REALLY late for me. There were no job postings on the website, but I took the chance anyway to see if they would consider me for hire. I have nothing to lose! I stayed up until 1:30 a.m. rewriting my cover letter. I sent it first thing Tuesday morning and received a response from the owner by noon! She said she wanted to meet with me when we were in town. So, a few emails later, it was arranged.

We met this afternoon at a local bar and grill, Austins, and talked for two hours over iced tea. I felt like I was talking to a colleague and like I could genuinely enjoy working for this lady. It couldn't have gone any better! She is going to email me a few more details about her company and I'm going to send her a a couple more items from my portfolio that I couldnt include (like radio spots). I'm VERY hopeful.

One other opportunity of sorts to mention - there is this great fabric store that I foresee spending a LOT of money at once we're here called Mama Said Sew. One of the store's owners is a freelance graphic artist who gave me a few other leads in the area. I'm going to follow up with those companies and organizations and see what happens.

All-in-all, I'm very hopeful.

We ended the day with a bike ride into Old Town for some ice cream. At 8 o'clock, the air was cool and the sun was setting behind the mountains. Every one was out on their bikes. It was the perfect ending to such an encouraging day!

House Hunting: Day 2, Part 1

After sleeping in a little and catching up on some MUCH needed Z's, we feasted upon the most amazing breakfast - La Mars donuts with a cup of The Good Farmer Coffee. It just doesn't get any better!

We did some searching online and mapped out our day of the houses we'd see. I touched base with an INCREDIBLE local landlord and scheduled a time to see one of her houses. After taking a look around, I was completely sold. Three bedrooms. Storage, storage, storage - a rarity in these older homes. One bathroom, eh, we'll live. But the backyard with a garden and sandbox completely won me over. One thing I hadn't noticed until Chris mentioned it after we left was that there was no air conditioning in the house, something very common in Colorado homes. That's a deal-breaker for my hot-natured husband.

And to add to my disappointment, the landlord, Michelle, calls me later to tell me that of the 10 families who previewed the home, they liked us so much and wanted to give us first dibs. She tells me that she and her daughter manage properties together and just have a great feeling about us. Oh, if the house only had A/C! I told her I'd call her back and let her know what we finally decide, but I know the answer. We're going to check out one of her other properties and see if it will work for us, because we've just GOT to rent from this lady!

So we drive around and around, checking out other rentals. I set up a few other appointments to preview homes, so we have a big day tomorrow. Our parameters are pretty specific, which limits us on our options:
  • Rent needs to be around $1000
  • We need three bedrooms
  • We need air conditioning
  • It has to be clean enough for our toddler to safely run around in
  • If possible, we want to live where our ministry will set down roots - Old Town
You'd think we have a ton of options, but we're competing against college kids and their roomies picking up all of the good homes. But God promises to care for us. We may be living in  David and Laura's basement, but we'll be cared for. Kidding. Kind of. Please pray with us in our search!

We finished our house hunting early so I could prepare for my interview. (I'll have a separate post for that.) But before my meeting, we stopped by the Fort Collins Bike Library to rent a few bikes. You really can't live here without having a bike! This place is so stinkin' cool!

Amarillo By Morning: Day 1

Day 1 of our FoCo Trip: Chris and I decided to drive through the night to Fort Collins. At 16 hours, it's the longest road trip we've made together alone. We took turns driving and sleeping every two-and-half hours, and it actually worked out quite well! Of course, we had a little Roy D. Mercer to keep us awake.

As George Strait sings, we made it to "Amarillo By Morning." I swear I sing that every time we drive through there, though Chris had never heard it until this trip. Seriously, who hasn't heard that song?!

Well anyway, we continued to stay on time and made it to FoCo by 2 o'clock, just in time to tour our first potential rent house. Two bedrooms, one bath, no storage. I vote no.

We spent the rest of the afternoon settling into David and Laura's house, which is way fun and really coming together! We even got to meet their neighbor, Hannah, who is so sweet! She and her boyfriend are young professionals and recent CSU graduates. We look forward to getting to know them better.
Our great friends Michael and Rachel Harper were in town from Denton scoping out the place to move to next summer. One-by-one, we plan to convince all of our friends to move with us. If you're reading this, you're next! We had dinner at Woody's Tavern - a fantastic pizza joint - and celebrated Mikey's birthday.

Day 2 promises to be exciting. I'm meeting with the owner of a local ad agency, The Mantooth Company, to talk about possibly working for them. We'll also be looking at more houses. Joy. I can't wait to finally have loose ends tied up and hope we can settle on some things this weekend.

Where's My Water-Proof Mascara?

Of all the days to forget water-proof mascara... what an overjoyed mess I've been today!

This morning, Chris led the congregation in worship as he played guitar and sang, something he's done countless times. But this morning was different -- I was watching my husband, the love of my life and best friend, now as the music pastor of our new church. Following him in preaching was David. I've listened to him teach a thousand times it seems since we were in high school Bible study together. But I couldn't help but see him in a new light, too, as I listened to him preach now as the pastor of our new church. Shoulder-to-shoulder I stood with my best friend Laura as we held hands and dabbed our eyes, completely overcome with pride in our husbands and amazement of how God is setting His plans into motion. Oh, how I love my friend. After the service, they had our team stand in front of the church to recognize us all and allow for everyone to come and greet us. The handshakes, hugs, words of wisdom and teary-eyed well-wishes were enough to make a heart swell ten times its size. I've never felt more supported in my life.

This evening, our guys were honored as they were ordained by our church. Our pastor, Robert, explained that ordination is the church's formal recognition of God's calling for Chris and David to do ministry. (As a side note, he also explained that we're ALL ordained for ministry.) The ordination involved the guys being examined individually by Robert and then together by all of the deacons. They were then brought before the congregation who was given a vote to ordain, of which they voted yes. There were a few testimonies given on behalf of Chris and David. The word used over and over again to describe each of them was "integrity", which is so evident to Laura and me. Then the congregation was invited to come forth and pray for us - the guys seated in front of the congregation and us wives standing behind them. Our present and past college students came first, followed by family and close friends, then the deacons and finally the pastoral team. The prayers offered up on our behalf were things our team has prayed since we began dreaming of a ministry in Fort Collins. It was so affirming to hear our prayers echoed by such wise, Godly people. I admit I opened my eyes and peaked a few times. I just wanted to soak it all in. We were surrounded by our own personal heroes of faith.

A reception was held in our honor following the ordination service. The room was packed! I'll never forget how Hannah ran non-stop through the room, greeting everyone and coercing people to give her more cookies, fruit and punch. Someone once told us before Hannah was born that she would be the church's baby, and now I fully understand what that means. Everyone adores her and I truly think she would go home with any one of our church family members.

We're so grateful for our church family. Their influence has played a significant role in who we are and what we do. We're so appreciative of all that Colonial Hills has done for our families and plan to take anyone who is willing to Fort Collins with us. Thanks to all of our family and close friends who came to celebrate with us on our big day!

Thanks A Bunch

“Our prayers for you are always spilling over into thanksgivings. We can't quit thanking God our Father and Jesus our Messiah for you!” Colossians 1:3

Words cannot express my gratitude for the support and generosity shown to us by our family and friends yesterday at the Fort Collins Flapjack Fundraiser. Over 60 families were represented, 15 volunteers cooked, served and cleaned, and more than $3,500 was raised. To put it simply, I am overwhelmed and humbled. Thank you!

A special thank you to The Diner who graciously allowed us to host this event. We appreciate you so much, Lloyd and Tresa Nichols! (And if you're reading this and you've never eaten at The Diner, you don't know what you're missing!)

A Wreck

Having just watched the series finale to my all-time favorite show LOST, I am an emotional wreck. Seriously, I'm sitting here bawling my eyes out, as if I've said goodbye to a dear friend. I know you say, "It's just a TV show, Randi. Get real." But for me, it's a bittersweet reminder that a chapter is coming to a close in my life.

You see, six years ago, Chris and I watched Oceanic Flight 815 crash to an Island. We were completely hooked as we witnessed the survivors climb out of the wreckage. And we anxiously awaited to see every new mystery uncovered. Week after week, we gathered to watch with some of our closest friends. I know it's just a TV show, but some of my favorite friendships have been born out of sharing an affinity for this show.

But what makes LOST more than just a pop-culture phenomenon of a television series to me -- what makes me such an emotional wreck right now -- is that it's been a constant (yes, LOST fans, I said constant) in our ever-changing lives.

In the past six years, I've married the love of my life, expanded our family and established a home, and poured my heart into the most incredible college students I think I'll ever know. As the time draws nearer for us to move to Fort Collins, I find myself searching for the constants in my life. There has been just so much change. But as the saying goes, "The only constant is change."

The bitter part is saying goodbye and moving away from our family, closest friends and the familiar things we hold near and dear to us. But the sweetness comes in the great memories we've made here in Tyler and the anticipation of what God's called us to do in Fort Collins.

A Blog to Follow

If you keep up with my blog, you'll also want to add this one to your list: iheartfortcollins.blogspot.com. Though I contribute to it, it's way cooler than my blog. I think The Suttons are the cool factor. :) Check it out!
